Snus Types & Flavors

Swedish snus comes in two different forms, loose snus and portion snus.

Loose Snus

Loose snus is basically tobacco that has been ground into 3 different forms; Coarse ground, Medium Ground and Fine ground.

Coarse Ground

Coarse ground snus has the biggest pieces and is the easiest to use. By easiest to use, we mean the easiest to form a prilla. Since the tobacco pieces are larger, there is more surface area for each one to grab one another and form. Coarse ground snus is also easier to remove since the prilla tends to stay intact better. The downside to Coarse ground snus is that it can be a bit uncomfortable in the lip if the prilla is to compacted. This type of grind is also easier for beginners to use since it’s more forgiving when hand molding a pris.

Medium Ground

Medium Ground snus is tobacco that has a bit smaller tobacco pieces and is also great for hand molding a pris but, can be a bit harder for beginners to use and may need a tool to use. Medium Ground snus also tends to fall apart a bit quicker in the lip and can be a bit hard to remove when you’re done. The flavor in Medium ground snus tends to come out faster but, also doesn’t last as long as Coarse ground snus.

Fine Ground

Fine Ground snus has the smallest tobacco pieces and resembles a wet powder in the can. This grind is the hardest to hand mold and the use of a tool is recommended for beginners. The upside to Fine ground snus is that the flavor comes out quickly and the prilla is quite comfortable in the lip for over two hours but, doesn’t last as long as the others in both flavor and prilla integrity. Find ground prillas are also a bit harder to remove when you’re done with them. We recommend trying all three grinds and finding your favorite!

Portion Snus

Portion snus comes in quite a few different types. There are basically 3 different sizes, Mini, Large and Maxi.

Mini Portion

Mini portions are the smallest and have typically below .5 grams of snus in them.

Regular/Large Portion

Large portions are the standard and the most popular size and typically have around 1 gram of snus each.

Maxi Portion

Maxi portions are the largest size portion and also have the most snus in them which is 1.4 grams of snus and above. Within these types there are 3 different types, White, Regular and Dry.

Original

Regular, or Original, portions go thru an additional step in the manufacturing process that adds a little more water to each one’s material that aids in allowing the flavors in the snus to marry better and release them faster when they are in the lip. The portion material also turns brown from the additional water.

White

White portions do not go thru this additional step and leaves the material its original white color.

Dry

Dry portions are just like the White ones but have less moisture in the snus. Dry portions can range from having very little moisture in them to having none at all. Dry portions also tend to be Mini portions and are very rarely Regular sized.

Strenght

The final classification for portion, as well as loose, snus is Nicotine content. Within this class is Regular level, Sterk, Stark and Strong and Extra Sterk, Extra Stark and Extra Strong.

Regular Strenght

Regular strength snus is snus with a Nicotine content of 9 mg per gram, or portion, and below.

Strong

Strong, Sterk and Stark snus is reserved for snus with Nicotine contents of between 10 mg and 14 mg per gram or portion and...

Extra Strong

Extra Strong, Extra Sterk and Extra Stark snus has the highest Nicotine content with amounts above 15 mg per gram or portion.

As you can see, there are a lot of different types of snus and the flavors vary just as much! The traditional flavor of Swedish snus is very simple; tobacco, water and salt. While this is the traditional flavor and brands like Ettan, Jakobsson’s Classic and Phantom Classic are great examples of how simplicity can be a good thing, there are other flavors out there that break with tradition. While flavors like Juniper berries, which are the primary flavor component in Gin, to Licorice and Bergamot, which has a flavor that’s a cross between a lemon and a grapefruit, are also traditional, flavors that range from cranberries, lavender, rose oil, honey and mint began to make their way into Swedish snus.

Recently, there has been a break from traditional Swedish flavors to include some American flavors like Wintergreen, Icy peppermint, apple and Peach with more unique flavors being introduced each year!
